Times are tough and the challenges ahead appear unsurmountable. The temptation to first return to pre-crisis projects and plans will be irresistible. But, you are experts of that show and it will soon pick up the tempo, of course, with greater efforts and attention from you.
The more pressing goals should be growth through diversification to add new digital age businesses and geographic expansion to new countries. This cannot be kept on hold till we 'stabilise.'
The first step in the growth plans should be human development, before, or rather, for business expansion. Preference should be given to grooming internal talent rather than looking out for 'geniuses' from outside. This caution is based on a distressing report that about US$21 billion are spent on 'headhunting'! And, God knows how much is spent on job hunting.
To grow geniuses internally, major changes should be taken up in human development strategies and plans. Most of the training courses are functional and some short term courses focus on leadership for 'senior managers'. Why not open up the leadership courses to everyone? Leaders cannot be developed as and when required. And some leadership courses are 2-3 days and some for a few weeks. An international headhunter said they give zero weightage for such leaders 'minted' in a few days or weeks.
Leadership is a transformational process. You have to find leaders who can stand out in any forum as magnetic and charismatic individuals. They don’t not only seal deals but also enhance the reputation of the company and themselves.
We suggest instead of need-based leadership courses, programmes on 'Executive Potential Development ' should be instituted. We have prepared a graphic to show the number of factors that can help people to stand out in any business gathering.
The factors are self-explanatory, yet let us discuss a few. The two factors in the internal circle, ‘youthfulness' and ‘zest’, can make a lasting impression when in full measure in a person. Both refer to the 'attitude' and not to age. If you wonder about how all the factors can be connected to jobs, remember we are talking about 'wizards' and not just 'managers'
Let us take the art factor. An executive was invited to the USA by a big company for the supply of parts. When he reached the office late in the day, the international sourcing officer said to him, "I have to rush for an art exhibition. Come, let's discuss en route to the gallery." Throughout that journey, she talked about art and this executive was silent. She asked him about the art scenario in India and he admitted complete ignorance.
Business is not only money and material but about people swimming in social media streams.
