Charisma Creates Magical Spell
In the first part of the ‘Joy of Blooming’ blog, we explained the steps, rather the secrets, of the job into joy of blooming and career into carrier of happiness for everyone. There are hundreds of self-improvement books and a constant flow of articles and papers. Please remember and put in practice that ‘leaders are readers’. The most effective gurus are books and literature. Bill Gates and Warren Buffet are voracious readers and unhesitatingly attribute their eminence to this habit.
In this blog, we introduce you to additional key concepts of all-round blooming and developing charisma.
Secrets of Blooming
“Why should I be unhappy? Every parcel of my being is in full bloom.” - Rumi.
The waves of resignations, increase in divorce rates, the ever-rising mountains of court cases – whether political, family or business (according to official reports, there are 73,000 cases pending in the Supreme Court and 44 million in all the courts in India) are indications of a lack of love and the rise of subtle or open hatred.
The first action to change such an unproductive and unhealthy situation is to learn to spread the cult of ‘love’ at all levels and in all spheres of activities to encourage, uplift and empower ourselves to enjoy the bounties of nature and new miraculous sources of joy and happiness. It is for us to choose to bloom by sharing gifts, talent, wisdom and expertise.
A fantasy, you think? Not at all. The main mantra of Bill Campbell, the trillion-dollar coach of the founders of Google and other Silicon Valley stalwarts, is: Love First, Lead Second. He says, “Love isn’t a word that’s usually applied to business relationships. Studies have shown that people often view warm and friendly employees as incompetent and workers who are more rigid and stiff as competent. Employees often learn they are rewarded for behaving more like robots than people. They are taught to separate personal emotions from the business environment.”
The mantra has a magical effect. The founders of Google candidly admitted that, without Bill Campbell, Google would not have been what it is. So, leaders - open up and spread the cult of all round love and you will see the people and the company bloom fully. And remember: When People Bloom/Shells and Silos Doom/ Business Booms /Company Zooms.

Charisma Creates Magical Spell but is not Magic
Everyone has read and heard about the crucial human virtue of charisma but few are clear about what it means and implies. In fact, the very mention of the word creates a sub-conscious emotion of self-denial - ‘no, it’s not for me’. Why not?
The very concept of charisma is surrounded in mystery. The use of words ‘magical’ and ‘magnetic’ has perhaps created the widely prevailing fear. Many give it a pass saying ‘it’s not for me’. However, eminent psychologist and author, Dan Schawbel, in his illuminating and well- researched article in the Forbes magazine has brought clarity by saying, “Long believed to be an innate, magical quality, charisma has come under the scrutiny of research scientists……….. (who) have found that, far from being an innate, magical quality, charisma is simply the result of learned behaviour. They have shown through laboratory experiments that the charisma of ordinary people can be raised by learning behavioural traits such as self-awareness, open body language, active listening, and treating each person you encounter with equal respect.”
The qualities appear simple and familiar, but to put them into practice may require persistent efforts leading to a behavioural transformation. Remember the famous words of Calvin Coolidge:
“Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan 'Press On!' has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race.”
To improve your own and your company’s prospects, sincerely check at every step how you rate on each of the above qualities on a scale of one to ten. If the deficiency is significant, it is advisable to seek a mentor or a coach.
Finally, an irrepressible urge to progress and adopting Bill Campbell’s proven mantra (Love First. Lead Second), will help you to bloom and become charismatic.
