How Humans Can Avoid Harm & Reap Benefits from Technological AI, AGI & ASI

Humans Can Avoid Harm & Reap Benefits from

Technological

AI, AGI & ASI

Artificial Intelligence (AI), Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) and Artificial Super Intelligence (ASI) are created by humans and will either benefit or harm humanity through beneficial or monstrous creations based on these.

This is evident from the statements of top scientists. The Godfather of AI, Hinton, told the New York Times: “Look at how it was five years ago and how it is now. Take the difference and propagate it forwards. That’s scary.”  In a Senate hearing last May about the potential of AI, Sam Altman, Head of Open AI, called regulation ‘crucial’.

The appeals for regulation are not going to achieve much as there are huge gains to be made from the use of AI in the current cut-throat competition for superiority. The only way to avoid harm and reap benefits is to metamorphose humans (please see the visual with acronyms below) into All-powerful Genuinely Inventive & All-round Sparkly Intuitionists.

The reason for ineffectiveness of regulations is in the wise saying, “Laws are nets of such textures that big ones break through, the little ones creep through and the middle-sized ones are entangled.” This is the stark reality of the long human history.

Through the ages, philosophers have realised the contradictory human capabilities for self-elevation or self-destruction, and have been striving to help humans to control, or better still eliminate, the ‘shadripus’ i.e. the six enemies of humans, viz Kama: Lust or desire; Krodha: Anger; Lobha: Greed; Mada: Pride or arrogance; Moha: Attachment; Matsarya: Jealousy. Or, you could think of the seven sins viz pride, greed, lust, envy, gluttony, wrath, and sloth.

These are not vague ideas, but actionable ones distilled by rishis through contemplation. There is proof of these human enemies/sins causing the wipe-out of entire clans. According to the Indian epic Mahabharata, a few years after the Kurukshetra War, Andhaka-Vrsni Yadava clans of Dvaraka were destroyed due to a fratricidal war.

If this cause-effect is a bit complex to comprehend, here is what the renowned philosopher Plato says bluntly:When we restrain or control ourselves, a rational being restrains an animal.” In this view, each of us carries the potential be divine or demonic. And, the point of human life is to constrain our desires with rationality and purify ourselves of animality.

You think this is too ancient and farfetched and unjust to humans at large? Just ponder over the contemporary, horrifyingly widespread conflicts (results of animality overtaking rationality in many sections of humanity), which often lead to violence taking the form of rampant gun crimes, widespread bullying in schools, inter-generational conflicts, divorces, conflicts at the workplace and at its, extreme, wars.

How to Awaken the Divine Spirit in Humans?

The violent behaviour of some humans is the result of the evil effects of the six enemies or    seven sins mentioned above. However, according to the scriptures, human souls are essentially divine.

  • In the Bhagwat Geeta, Lord Krishna says, “O Arjun, I am seated in the heart of all living entities. I am the beginning, middle, and end of all beings.”

  • The Bible verse (1 John 3) says that “people are children of God, born of Him, as a sign of God's great love.”

  • In ‘A Dialogue With Sadhguru’, Ross Sinonini quotes him: “If you learn to go into the deeper dimensions of who you are, you will see that all scriptures will be stale. When the creator is throbbing within you every moment, you must look .”

The challenge is to awaken the divine spirit in each one, so that  no one becomes a victim of the six enemies/seven sins.

Paths to Avoid Harm and Reap Benefits from

Technological AI/AGI/ASI

Here are the ways to turn people into  All-powerful Genuinely Inventive & All-round Sparkly Intuitionists so they can reap the benefits of AI/AGI/ASI.

 Champion Change

Change is so rapid that many who do not champion it could become its victims.  A very cogent real-life example is the widely reported downfall of fast-growing US company, Chegg, because of the rise of OpenAI’s ChatGPT. An estimated $14.5 billion in value has been wiped out as the US-based edtech company’s stock has plummeted by 99 per cent from its 2021 peaks.

3 Es Way to Escape Harm & Enjoy the Benefits of Technological AI/AIG/AIS

For quicker appreciation and future reference, we have created an illustration to reveal the elements of the three Es, viz Education, Enlightenment and Empowerment. Each word in the visual shows the way to be ahead of time during technological upheavals

Elevate Dignify by Unusual Concepts’ Assimilation Through Empathy

and

Equanimity Novelty Learning Inferencing Grasping Honesty Trust Empathy Nobility

and

Encourage Motivate Perform Operations with Equanimous Resilience

                                                                                                   for

Total Overall Prosperity

and

Socially Useful Completely Caring Empowering Sound Strategies

All the three Es are interconnected and interact with each other. In fact, the wider meaning of education includes the other two. Contrary to general belief, education is not that which is only imparted in schools/colleges nor is it for a limited period, but is a life-long pursuit.

There are constant discussions on the new education policies and practices. But, in reality, the patterns are archaic, mechanistic and utilitarian. There is an urgent need to modify the approach from creating human and other resources and focus instead on creating holistic personalities. According to psychologists, the word “holistic” simply means addressing the whole person. This includes a person's physical, emotional, mental, social, spiritual, and financial health. Addressing the whole person in mind-body-spirit can bring out the healthiest, happiest version of ourselves which in short means All-powerful Genuinely Inventive & All-round Sparkly Intuitionist  souls who can lead the change and not be its victims. The real lasting asset is self-empowerment through intuition, expertise, communication, empathy and capability to create one’s own sphere of influence.

Napoleon Hill, in his best-selling book, ‘Think and Grow Rich’, recommends a positive mental attitude and defines it as “comprising the 'plus' characteristics represented by words such as faith, integrity, hope, optimism, courage, initiative, generosity, tolerance, tact, kindliness and good common sense”.

In short, there is a need to evolve and implement a system for making people better thinkers, better citizens, better intuitionists and better humans - not just better employees.

The human faculty of intuition has been wrongly relegated in favour of memorising, and regurgitating for better scores. The education in most institutes/schools is focused on information, facts and skills, which are no doubt necessary, but for wisdom and enlightenment we should constantly pursue self -discovery and explore new understanding by challenging old concepts, ideas and beliefs.

This is very clearly explained in the verse by Sufi saint Bullehshah:

पढ़ पढ़ इल्म हज़ार किताबां, कदे अपने आप नूं पढ़या नईं ...
ऐवेँ लड़दा ऐं शैतान दे नाल बन्देया, कदी नफ़्स अपनी नाल लड़या नईं ...

The gist of the above couplet is:

You have read thousands of books but have never studied yourself,
Futilely, you fight with the so-called Devil, but never confront your own being.

Who should take the responsibility to carry out these reforms? Let each one of us follow the 3 Es system and ensure everyone is an All-powerful Genuinely Inventive & All-round Sparkly Intuitionist.

Such individuals will be able to follow the path of self-reliance for successful living shown by Lord Krishna in Bhagwat Geeta, where he says: “the self is the friend of the self and the self is the enemy.”

Comments

  1. The danger of AI or any technology putting the human risk is far less likely than humans willingly risking life of self/others for selfish gains. I would go on to say the tool is only medium of action that is predetermined. A murder with gun or knife is immaterial as long as the mind is fixated and approved of doing it.

On the contrary, in the apocalyptic scenario that AI runs the world, the creativity of human kind will rise, because it is in quest of survival and power, two of the most powerful motives.

For now, if we replace the threat of AI with any other threat to human kind say climate change, health risks due to lifestyle, your advice still stands true. Though in my limited understanding, I would probably club Educate and Enlighten and my 3Es would be Empathise, Educate, Empower.

  2. Thank you. Very cogent comments.; addition of empathy is a significant addition .

  3. That AI algorithms are catching up fast with the human ingenuity and tactics is evident from the reported story about a tiny robot kidnapping 12 larger robots from a show room by engaging them in in conversation before leading them out!

    ReplyDelete
  4. If a tiny robot can kidnap 12 big robots o iss it not rodly to have robots for care of children and aged?

    ReplyDelete
  5. Please remember research is continuous and surely some safeguards restraining risky steps will be taken
    And, risk management and vigilance are and will be sine-qua-non!;

    ReplyDelete
  6. Biggest safeguard is development of 'holistic' personalities

    ReplyDelete
  7. The 3 Es visual itself shows the way no need to provide further evidence !

    ReplyDelete
  8. "Laws are nets of such texture the big ones-----" is a profound observation; the proofs are everywhere all the times

    ReplyDelete
  9. "Holistic Personality" is a cherished concept, any courses/books for guidance?

    ReplyDelete
  10. 'shadripus' and 'seven sins' cannot be ignored even by atheist/agnostics because basically these are basic aspects of human mind and are inseparable parts of psychology. One can check one's behaviour through monitoring them.

  11. A team of Apple scholars in heir paper claim that Large Language Models (LLMs) can't yet intelligently reason.
A respite for raising the human capabilities to derive gains and avoid losses from the technological AI/ AGI/ASI
